QUICK ANSWER

Studying in China starts with five decisions

Choose what you want to study, your degree level, teaching language, realistic budget and preferred study environment. Once those are clear, you can compare universities, scholarships and application requirements without wasting time on options that do not fit your profile.

01 / WHERE TO BEGIN

Start with your subject, not a university ranking

China has a very large higher-education system. A famous university can still be the wrong choice if the program, language, cost or admission requirements do not match you.

01

Choose your field

Start with the subject and degree level that fit your academic background and long-term goals.

02

Choose the teaching language

Compare English-taught, Chinese-taught and language-preparation routes.

03

Build a realistic shortlist

Compare program strength, admission requirements, city, costs and student environment together.

04

Prepare the budget

Look beyond tuition and include accommodation, daily life, insurance, transport and travel.

05

Prepare the application

Confirm the exact document checklist and deadlines for each university and scholarship.

02 / TEACHING LANGUAGE

English-taught or Chinese-taught?

Teaching language changes the program choices available to you, the language evidence a university may request and how you experience daily academic life.

English-taught

Useful for students who want to begin their degree without first reaching an academic Mandarin level. Always verify the university's current English requirement.

Chinese-taught

Can open a wider set of programs and a deeper local study experience, but the required Chinese level varies by university and degree.

A language year can make sense for some students, but it should be a deliberate academic decision rather than an automatic step for everyone.

03 / UNIVERSITY & CITY

Compare the program and the place together

Your university decision affects academic quality, admission difficulty, cost of living, climate, transport, internships, campus life and the kind of China experience you will have.

4 checks

Before adding a university to your shortlist

  • Is the program strong in your field?
  • Are the admission requirements realistic for your profile?
  • Can you afford the total cost of the city and university?
  • Does the teaching language match your current preparation?

04 / COST & SCHOLARSHIPS

Build a full-year budget before comparing offers

Tuition alone does not tell you whether an option is affordable. City, accommodation, food, insurance and travel can materially change the real annual cost.

05 / APPLICATION

Confirm the checklist before you upload documents

Application requirements are not identical across China. Universities, degree levels and scholarships can ask for different documents, language evidence and deadlines.

01

Choose realistic options

Match your academic background to the university and program requirements.

02

Check every deadline

University and scholarship timelines may be different, even for the same intake.

03

Prepare the exact documents

Use the checklist for the specific program instead of relying on a generic list.

04

Review before submitting

Names, dates, translations and supporting documents should be consistent across the file.

FAQ

Common questions before studying in China

What should I decide first if I want to study in China?

Start with the subject you want to study, the degree level, your preferred teaching language and a realistic total budget. Those four choices narrow the university list much faster than starting from rankings alone.

Can international students study in China in English?

Yes. Many universities offer English-taught programs, especially at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Availability and language requirements vary by university and program, so each program should be checked individually.

Do I need to speak Chinese before studying in China?

Not always. Students can choose English-taught programs, Chinese-taught programs or a language-preparation route. Even when a degree is taught in English, basic Mandarin can make daily life much easier.

How much does studying in China cost?

There is no single national budget. Tuition, accommodation and daily costs vary by university, city, degree and lifestyle. Build your budget from the full year rather than comparing tuition alone.

Are scholarships available for international students in China?

Yes. Government, local and university scholarships exist, but eligibility, coverage and application dates vary. Treat each scholarship as a separate opportunity with its own rules.

I am Moroccan. Where should I start?

Use ECAP's dedicated Study in China for Moroccan Students guide. It covers admissions, documents, scholarships, costs, CSCA, visa preparation and the journey from Morocco to China.
