Quick answer

After admission, study duration is the first factor that determines the visa category

Most bachelor's, master's and PhD programs normally fall under X1 because they last more than 180 days. Short programs may fall under X2. Use the current Embassy instructions rather than an old checklist.

01 / Visa category

X1 or X2? Start with the length of study

The official distinction is straightforward, but the supporting documents and post-entry steps differ. Make sure the duration on your admission documents matches the visa route.

X1 · long-term study

For study lasting more than 180 days. The Embassy currently asks for the admission letter plus a Confirmation Form for Study in China, JW201 or JW202. After entry, a residence permit application is required within 30 days.

X2 · short-term study

For study lasting no more than 180 days. Current Embassy guidance accepts the DQ information form issued by the Chinese institution or an admission letter issued by a Chinese educational institution.

02 / Documents

Build a consistent file before uploading anything

The Embassy publishes basic requirements for all visa applicants, then category-specific documents. A visa officer may request additional evidence or an interview depending on the case.

Passport valid for at least 6 months on the application date with blank pages
Recent compliant ID photo
Accurately completed online visa application
Admission letter from the Chinese institution
JW201 or JW202 for X1
DQ or qualifying admission letter for X2
Copies of previous Chinese visas if applicable
Additional documents for minors where applicable

03 / Study forms

Do not confuse the admission letter with the study confirmation form

The current Embassy page lists forms by visa category. Do not assume a fixed funding meaning for JW201 versus JW202 unless your university or the competent authority explains it for your case.

01JW201 / JW202

Confirmation forms used with X1 under current Embassy guidance. Check the name, passport number, institution and study period as soon as you receive them.

02DQ

Information form for short-term international students used in the X2 route under current guidance.

03Admission letter

The core document linking the visa request to the institution and program. Correct any identity mismatch before submission.

04Original or copy?

Follow the current Embassy, platform and university instructions. Document issuance practices can change between intakes.

04 / Application from Morocco

The current process starts online before passport submission and fingerprints

According to the current Chinese Embassy in Morocco page, applicants complete the visa form and submit documents through the consular platform first. Passport submission and fingerprints take place after preliminary online approval.

1. Check university documents

Match your name, passport number, program and duration across the admission letter and JW/DQ form.

2. Prepare clear scans

Make sure passport, photo, admission and supporting documents are complete and readable.

3. Apply through the official platform

Use the link published by the Embassy rather than an unofficial intermediary site.

4. Wait for preliminary approval

Follow the platform instructions before moving to the physical submission stage.

5. Submit passport and fingerprints when instructed

Follow the current official instructions shown after initial review.

6. Check the issued visa

Verify your identity, passport number, category and dates before travel.

05 / Timing and fees

For Moroccan nationals, the current official table lists the standard visa fee as 0 MAD

This is often misreported in commercial content. The Embassy's current table lists 0 for Moroccan nationals under standard service, while express service has an extra charge. Re-check the table before applying.

Standard service

Published processing time: 4 working days, with a warning that some individual applications may take longer.

Express service

Published processing time: 2 to 3 working days, with a 300 MAD surcharge per visa.

Moroccan national

The current official table lists a 0 MAD standard visa fee for Moroccan citizens.

Keep a time buffer

Published processing time is not a guarantee. Do not plan travel around the minimum possible timeline.

06 / Fingerprints

The current rule differs between X1 and some short-stay visas

The Embassy notice valid through 31 December 2026 exempts some short-stay visa applicants from fingerprint collection but keeps fingerprints mandatory for several categories including X1. For a 2027 application, check whether a new extension has been issued.

X1 remains fingerprint-required under the current notice
The current short-stay exemption is temporary through 31 December 2026
Do not assume the 2026 rule automatically carries into 2027
Check the notice in force on your actual application date

07 / After arriving in China

X1 is not the end of the process: student residence formalities follow entry

China's National Immigration Administration states that a foreign national whose visa requires a residence permit must apply within 30 days of entry. For student residence, an X1 holder submits a school letter showing the study period and proof of admission or enrollment.

  • Keep your university documents accessible
  • Contact the international student office promptly
  • Start the residence permit process within the legal deadline
  • A health examination may be required depending on duration and local rules
  • Follow university guidance for accommodation registration and local formalities
  • Off-campus part-time work or internship requires approval and the appropriate residence-permit endorsement
X1 is not the end of the process: student residence formalities follow entry

08 / Common mistakes

Small inconsistencies can delay the visa file

The goal is not to collect the most documents; it is to submit an accurate, consistent file based on current official instructions.

Using an old-year checklist
Mismatch in name or passport number across documents
Guessing X1/X2 instead of checking study duration
Paying an intermediary believing it is a mandatory Embassy visa fee
Treating the published processing time as guaranteed
Forgetting the residence permit step after X1 entry
Assuming JW201/JW202 always has the same funding meaning
Booking inflexible travel before the visa is complete
