Quick answer

You can apply after the Bac, but eligibility is program-specific

Bachelor's applicants generally need a high-school/Bac qualification, master's applicants a bachelor's degree, and PhD applicants a master's degree. Universities then add their own academic, language, testing and document requirements.

01 / Core requirements

Start with the requirements that appear across most admissions

This is not one national checklist, but it covers the main areas universities usually review.

Non-Chinese nationality and valid passport under the eligibility rules
Previous qualification required for the degree level
Academic transcripts and verifiable study record
Language evidence when required by the program
Admission tests or assessments required by the university
Identity, health and personal documents where applicable
Extra requirements for competitive or specialist programs
Scholarship criteria checked separately from ordinary admission

02 / Degree level

Your previous qualification depends on the degree you are applying for

Universities may then add program-specific academic, language, research or selection requirements.

01Bachelor's

High-school diploma/Bac or equivalent. Some universities accept expected-graduation evidence before requiring the final diploma at registration.

02Master's

Bachelor's degree or equivalent. Recommendations, personal statements or study plans may be required.

03PhD

Master's degree or equivalent. Research programs may ask for a proposal, supervisor fit or additional academic evidence.

04Language / short program

Requirements can differ significantly from degree admissions, so use the program-specific page.

03 / Grades

There is no single 10/20 or 12/20 rule that guarantees admission in China

Universities set their own standards. Use your academic record to build a realistic university shortlist, not as an automatic guarantee.

Tsinghua 2027 example

Tsinghua asks for outstanding academic performance and accepts national matriculation evidence such as BAC, but it does not publish one score that guarantees admission.

Competition matters

The more selective the university or major, the stronger the academic profile usually needs to be.

Grades are not the whole file

Transcripts, subjects, language, tests, documents and interviews can all matter depending on the program.

Scholarship competition is separate

You can meet ordinary admission requirements without being competitive enough for a specific scholarship.

04 / Study language

The language of instruction determines what proof you may need

HSK, IELTS, TOEFL or another accepted form of proof depends on the university and program.

  • Chinese-taught programs commonly specify an HSK level and score
  • English-taught programs may require IELTS, TOEFL or another accepted test
  • Some universities accept proof that previous study was in English
  • Nanjing University publishes different language requirements by degree and field
  • Tsinghua 2027 requires strong English for its English-taught programs
  • Always check the exact program page
The language of instruction determines what proof you may need
CSCA is becoming important for a number of international bachelor's applications

05 / CSCA and assessments

CSCA is becoming important for a number of international bachelor's applications

From 2026/2027, universities such as Nanjing University require CSCA for all international undergraduate applicants, while other institutions may use it differently. Required subjects can depend on the major.

  • Check whether CSCA is mandatory for your target university
  • Check the exact subjects for your major
  • Schedule the test before the application deadline
  • Keep the CSCA report with your academic file
  • Universities may add interviews or internal assessments
  • Use ECAP's CSCA guide for practical preparation

06 / Age and scholarships

Do not turn a scholarship age limit into a national admission rule

Age limits can differ by university, program and scholarship. Always identify what the published limit applies to.

Tsinghua 2027 · Bachelor's

Applicants should be at least 18 by September 1, 2027, with guardian arrangements for younger applicants. This is a university example.

Nanjing 2027 · self-funded Bachelor's

The current guide publishes an 18–30 range together with high-school, language and CSCA requirements.

Xiamen 2026 · Bachelor's

The ordinary admissions guide publishes an 18–30 range, while scholarship programs at the same university use different limits.

Chinese Government Scholarship · 2026 example

Xiamen's official guide lists under 25 for bachelor's, under 35 for master's and under 40 for PhD for that scholarship program.

07 / How to check eligibility

Use this order instead of relying on a generic internet checklist

Turn “Can I study in China?” into a precise program-by-program check.

1. Choose the degree level

Bachelor's, master's, PhD or language study.

2. Choose major and language

This strongly affects language, tests and documents.

3. Open the current official guide

Use the university's admissions page for the intake you want.

4. Separate admission and scholarship

Check program eligibility first, scholarship eligibility second.

5. Check CSCA and language

Especially for 2027 bachelor's applications.

6. Prepare documents

Use the official checklist and ECAP's document guide together.

7. Build a balanced shortlist

Avoid applying only to ultra-selective options.

08 / Common mistakes

Most bad advice comes from generalizing one valid rule too widely

A rule for one university or scholarship is not automatically a rule for every Chinese university.

Claiming 10/20 or 12/20 guarantees admission everywhere
Treating CSC age limits as national university admission limits
Assuming the same IELTS or HSK score applies everywhere
Ignoring CSCA when the target university requires it
Confusing admission eligibility with scholarship eligibility
Using an old intake guide without rechecking
Choosing a university name without checking the exact program
Relying on another student's experience instead of the official page

FAQ

Common questions about China study requirements

Direct answers without inventing a national rule that does not exist.

What GPA or Bac score is required?

There is no single national score for all universities. Each institution and program sets its own academic expectations.

Is 10/20 enough?

There is no general yes/no answer. Compare your record with the specific program and university requirements.

Can I study in China directly after the Bac?

Yes, if you meet the bachelor's program requirements for academics, language, testing and documents.

Is there one age limit for bachelor's admission?

No. Universities and scholarship programs publish different limits.

Is IELTS mandatory?

Not always. It depends on the program and what language evidence the university accepts.

Is HSK required for English-taught programs?

Not necessarily for admission, although universities may have other Chinese-language requirements later.

Is CSCA required everywhere?

Do not generalize it to every university. Some institutions now require it for all international bachelor's applicants; others use it differently.

Are scholarship requirements the same as admission requirements?

No. Program eligibility and scholarship eligibility must be checked separately.

Can I apply before receiving my final diploma?

Some universities accept expected-graduation evidence and require the final diploma before registration.

How do I choose universities for my grades?

Compare several institutions using your academic record, Bac track, intended major, language, tests and budget.
